IREN Limited, a leading AI cloud operator, has been facing challenges as it reported $19 million of EBITDA against a staggering $30 billion of capital expenditure. This has led to the company being downgraded to Strong Sell status due to unsustainable economics and growing financial risks. Despite its AI cloud revenue surpassing mining revenue, IREN fell short of revenue estimates for the fiscal year, with adjusted EBITDA unable to cover rising stock-based compensation costs.
When compared to Cipher Digital Inc. (CIFR), another company in the AI cloud space, IREN and CIFR both benefited from having access to large amounts of power originally built for Bitcoin mining. As demand for data center capacity from AI developers and hyperscalers increases, both companies have transformed into direct plays on the scarcity of powered sites, making them attractive investment opportunities.
IREN has set its sights on achieving over $4 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) by December, but capacity additions towards the end of the quarter are expected to delay most revenue gains until March 2027. Despite this, shares of IREN climbed 4% after co-founder and co-CEO, Daniel Roberts, reassured investors that the company's capital plan for fiscal year 2027 can be funded through debt and prepayments without the need for a significant equity raise.
IREN CEO addressed investor concerns over the massive $30 billion capital expenditure, explaining that the AI infrastructure industry is experiencing exponential growth, leading to larger numbers in terms of investments. With over $4 billion of contracted AI Cloud ARR and increasing customer prepayments covering a significant portion of GPU CapEx, IREN is aiming to reach 800 MW of IT capacity by 2027, utilizing secured grid connections worldwide.
Despite challenges and skepticism from investors, IREN continues to push forward with its AI cloud transition, experiencing rapid growth in revenue and contract economics. With the market remaining pessimistic about IREN's future, the company's ability to secure customer funding upfront and reduce reliance on equity for its extensive capital expenditure plans may prove to be key factors in its success moving forward.

NVDA has averaged a 9.2% absolute move on the day after earnings and closed higher 67% of the time. Two in three reactions land between −4.2% and +16.3% — the distribution is skewed right, not symmetric.
